Which Pokémon Is the Most Valuable to Collect? (It Is Not Charizard)
Everyone assumes Charizard is the most valuable Pokémon. The data says it is only number 3, behind Umbreon and Mew. Here is the full ranking and how to value yours.
In this guide
Ask anyone which Pokemon is the most valuable and the answer is instant: Charizard. So we measured it, taking the median price of every printing of 21 of the most iconic Pokemon. Charizard is iconic, but card for card it is only the third most valuable. Two others quietly cost more.
The most valuable Pokemon, ranked
We ranked each Pokemon by the median trend price across all of its printings, so a single Gold Star or Base Set grail cannot skew the result. The top ten:
- Umbreon, typical card €62
- Mew, €57
- Charizard, €36
- Gengar, €32
- Rayquaza, €32
- Lugia, €26
- Venusaur, €22
- Blastoise, €21
- Mewtwo, €16
- Tyranitar, €16
The full ranking of all 21 is in the most valuable Pokémon study. Umbreon, not Charizard, sits at the top.
Why Umbreon beats Charizard
It is not rarity, every one of these has cheap commons and expensive chases. It is demand. Umbreon, with its dark moonlit look, is one of the single most collected Pokemon, so its entire price curve sits higher than everyone else's. It is the same brand-and-demand force that makes a Charizard cost more than its rivals, except Umbreon wins the popularity contest outright. Umbreon also tops its own family, as covered in which Eeveelution is worth the most.

Typical value is not the chase ceiling
These are typical (median) values, and every Pokemon on the list has a chase card far above its median: the Umbreon Gold Star trends around €4,990, the Base Set Charizard €2,712, the Rayquaza Gold Star €3,519. So a random Umbreon is not automatically worth a fortune, the median just means Umbreon cards tend to hold more than most. The exact printing decides everything, which is exactly why the vintage grails like the Gold Stars are a separate conversation from the typical card.
The most consistent earner: Gengar
One quiet standout: Gengar ranks fourth on the median, but 35% of its printings are worth €100 or more, the highest share of any Pokemon we measured. So while Umbreon has the highest typical card, Gengar is the most reliably pricey across its catalog. Popularity shows up in different shapes.
How to value your Pokemon
- Pin the exact printing: the set, card number, holo or non-holo, and edition.
- Filter to English, Near Mint or better.
- Average the four lowest current offers for that exact card. That is what it genuinely sells for.
