What it costs to complete the original Pokémon sets today (1999-2003)
The binder from your childhood has a price tag now. Completing the median WOTC-era set costs about €2,871 today, roughly 3.4x a modern master set, and the famous ones are steeper: €7,126 for the 1999 Base Set, where a single Charizard is 58.7% of the whole bill.
One card can be the set, and the divide is older than it looks
Vintage completion is a story of single cards: Charizard is 58.7% of Base Set, Dark Dragonite is 51.4% of Team Rocket, and a median 69.7% of any WOTC set's cost sits in its top 10 cards. The structural surprise is at the era's end: Aquapolis and Skyridge (2002-03) already ran the modern base-vs-master split, cheap printed runs under a secret Crystal layer that pushes Skyridge to €17,441. The completion divide was born twenty years before Lorcana made it policy.

- Prices are per-printing references with the edition unspecified: 1st Edition, Shadowless and graded copies trade far above these floors, so every absolute figure here is deliberately conservative. Medians, rankings and shares are the robust claims.

How much does it cost to complete the original Pokémon Base Set?
About €7,126 for one of each of its 102 cards at Cardmarket reference prices (valued 2026-08-12, edition unspecified, so 1st Edition and graded premiums sit ON TOP of this). And it is really one purchase plus change: Charizard alone runs about €4,185, 58.7% of the entire set's cost, and the top 10 cards are 87.4% of it.
Which original Pokémon set is the most expensive to complete?
Skyridge (2003), at about €17,441 for the master set, and it is not close. Its base run is ~€1,191; the gap is its 38 secret-numbered cards, the Crystal Pokémon and their peers, which the market prices like relics. Aquapolis works the same way (~€800 base vs ~€6,658 master). The famous sets rank lower: Base Set ~€7,126, Neo Destiny ~€5,639 (Shining Charizard ~€1,112).
Are old Pokémon sets more expensive to complete than modern ones?
Yes, about 3.4x at the median: a WOTC-era master set runs ~€2,871 against ~€839 for a modern (2020+) master set. But the structure differs: vintage cost is spread through the whole printed set (scarcity by age), while modern cost concentrates in the secret slots above the printed number.
