Are Universes Beyond Cards Worth More Than Normal Magic Cards?
Magic's crossovers with Lord of the Rings, Final Fantasy and Marvel spark endless debate. The data says a UB mythic costs about 2.2× a normal one, but the IP is only half the story.
In this guide
Every time a new Magic crossover drops, the same argument reignites: are these cards worth more than a normal Magic card, or are you just paying for the logo on the front? One half of that is answerable with hard data, and at the top rarity the answer is a clear yes. Which crossover and which card you own, though, matters far more than how famous the franchise is.
The Universes Beyond premium, measured
We split every priced modern Magic card by the Universes Beyond flag and compared the medians. A Universes Beyond mythic trades at a median of $4.37, about 2.2x a normal-set mythic at $2.00. At rare the gap shrinks to roughly 1.3x. So the premium is real, but it is concentrated at the top rarity. The full breakdown is in the Universes Beyond tax study.
Brand plus scarcity, not brand alone
The premium is not uniform, and this is the interesting part. The highest medians belong to small, collector-focused products: Jurassic World at $12.41, Final Fantasy (Through the Ages) at $4.97, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles at $3.37. The biggest, most heavily-printed crossovers sit close to normal-set prices: The Lord of the Rings at $1.61 and Warhammer 40,000 at $1.38, despite being some of the most famous IPs of all. The franchise gets people in the door, but the print run decides the price.

So which crossover cards actually hold value?
Two things to look for: the smaller collector-focused sets over the mass-printed ones, and within any set the mythics and short-printed treatments over the commons. A beloved franchise on a heavily-printed card is still a cheap card. Do not assume a card is valuable just because it is your favourite crossover.
How to value a Universes Beyond card
- Pin the exact printing: set, card number, foil or non-foil, and any special treatment.
- Filter to the correct printing and Near Mint or better.
- Average the four lowest current offers. That is its real price.
That is the what's my trading card worth method; for the general Magic walk-through see how to value Magic: The Gathering cards. This sits alongside two related Magic premiums worth knowing: the mythic premium and the Secret Lair premium.
