The Universes Beyond Tax: do Magic's crossover cards cost more?

Universes Beyond, Magic’s crossovers with Lord of the Rings, Final Fantasy, Marvel and more, is one of the game’s most-argued topics. One question is answerable with data: do these cards actually cost more? At the top rarity, the answer is a clear yes.

Brand plus scarcity, not brand alone

The Universes Beyond premium is real, about 2.2× at mythic, but it is not uniform. The highest medians belong to small, collector-focused products like Jurassic World and Final Fantasy (Through the Ages), while the biggest, most heavily-printed crossovers (Lord of the Rings, Warhammer 40,000) sit near normal-set prices. In other words the IP gets people in the door, but the print run decides the price, the same lesson as the reprint cliff.

FAQ

Do Universes Beyond cards cost more than normal Magic cards?

At the top rarity, yes, clearly. Universes Beyond mythics trade at a median $4.37 versus $2.00 for normal expansion mythics, about 2.2×. The gap is smaller at rare ($1.16 vs $0.88, 1.3×). The crossover IP, limited-window printing and crossover-collector demand all push the ceiling up.

Which Universes Beyond franchise is the most expensive?

Jurassic World leads at a $12.41 median, followed by Final Fantasy (Through the Ages) ($4.97) and Marvel Universe ($3.02). The bigger, more heavily-printed crossovers like The Lord of the Rings ($1.61) and Warhammer 40,000 ($1.38) sit lower, because supply is much larger. Scarcity of the specific product matters as much as the brand.

Is Universes Beyond a good investment then?

The premium is real but modest at the median, a few dollars, not a different asset class. Where it matters is the ceiling: crossover chase cards and collector-boosters can run high, and unlike normal sets a franchise print window can close and not come back. As always, treat these as reference estimates and expect prices to move.

Where does this data come from, and is it reliable?

We pulled paper Magic cards at mythic and rare with a USD price via the open Scryfall API, split by Scryfall's is:ub flag (Universes Beyond vs normal expansion sets), and took the median of each (TCGplayer USD via the open Scryfall API, valued 2026-07-05); we excluded cards under $0.30 to avoid bulk noise. These are reference estimates, not sold records, and prices move. We never scrape marketplaces and never invent a number; the figures are reproducible from the open API.
