How to Value Magic: The Gathering Cards (What Makes an MTG Card Worth Money)

What drives Magic card value — printing, rarity, foil, format demand and the Reserved List — and how to look up any MTG card's value for free.

Magic has one of the deepest secondary markets in all of trading cards, and value is driven by playability as much as scarcity. Here's how to value Magic: The Gathering cards and spot the ones worth money.

What drives an MTG card's value

  • The exact printing. A card can have many printings across sets, and they're not worth the same. The set and collector number define which one you have — always value by printing, not just name.
  • Rarity. Common, uncommon, rare, mythic — but rarity alone doesn't set price; a played-everywhere rare can beat a useless mythic.
  • Foil and special treatments. Foils, extended/borderless art, showcase frames and serialized cards command premiums over the standard version.
  • Format demand. This is the big one for Magic. Staples in popular formats — especially Commander, plus Modern, Legacy and Pioneer — hold value because people actually need them. Demand can move a card more than scarcity.
  • The Reserved List. A set of older cards Wizards has promised never to reprint. Reserved List cards (think dual lands and power) carry structural scarcity and some of the highest prices in the game.
  • Condition. As with any card, edges, corners and surface matter — and grading can lift premium cards further.
For Magic, ask "does anyone need this in a deck?" before "is it rare?" Playable staples are where steady value lives.
