MTG bans Candelabra of Tawnos in Legacy; next update Aug 10

Banned and Restricted updates are the single most reliable price event in Magic, and this one carries the usual two-sided move. A card banned out of the format it defined loses its format demand overnight, and the market reprices it down within days, sometimes hours. Candelabra of Tawnos is a reserved-list card, which complicates the usual story, because collector demand can cushion a hit that pure playability would not.

The more actionable side is the replacements. When a combo piece like Seeker of Skybreak comes out of Pauper, the decks that lost their engine do not disappear, they look for the next best line, and the cards that enable it can spike as players scramble to rebuild. The winners of a ban are usually quieter than the losers, which is exactly why watching them pays.

Spinning Competitive Brawl into its own format is the sleeper here. A new sanctioned format creates fresh demand for the commanders and staples that are strong in it, and that demand tends to build over weeks rather than spike on the announcement. The next B&R window is August 10. Put it on your calendar, and track the staples you hold going into it, because the edge in Magic is almost always knowing before the rest of the market reacts.
