"Is the foil worth more?" is the most common question about a trading card, and the honest answer is: usually yes, sometimes a lot, occasionally no. The mistake is treating foil as a fixed bonus on top of the normal price. It is not. A foil is a separate product with its own separate market, and the gap between the two ranges from a few cents to hundreds of times the plain card. A foil is a different card, not a shinier version of the same one
This is the idea that fixes everything else. The plain printing and the foil printing of the same character are two distinct products, each with its own supply, its own demand, and its own price. Cardmarket and every other market list them separately. So the first rule of valuing a foil is the same as valuing any card: pin the exact printing first, including the finish, before you look at a single price.
Get this wrong and the error is enormous, not small. Because the two markets are independent, a foil can trade at many multiples of the plain card, so reading the wrong line is not a rounding error, it is a different number entirely.
What the same card actually costs, plain vs foil
We looked at 60,005 cards that exist in both finishes, the exact same card in plain and in foil, across 11 games. The typical foil costs about 2.7x the plain version. That is the anchor to carry in your head: as a rough default, a foil is worth a bit under three times its non-foil twin, before you check the specific card.
But the average hides how much it varies by game:
- In Union Arena, the foil IS the chase: a median 26x the plain card.
- In Disney Lorcana and Riftbound, the premium is a more modest 3.3x.
- Plenty of games sit around the 2.7x to 3x mark.

The counterintuitive part: sometimes the foil is worth less
Here is the finding that surprises people. In Magic: The Gathering, 9.4% of foils trade CHEAPER than the plain copy of the same card. Nearly one in ten. It happens when a card is played mostly for function rather than looks, foils were printed in abundance, and some players actively prefer the non-foil (foils can curl, and some dislike the pattern under sleeves). So "it is foil, it must be worth more" is wrong often enough that you should always check, never assume.
The Lorcana Enchanted: the extreme end of the foil premium
Lorcana is the clearest example of how far a finish can move a price. The chase in Lorcana is the Enchanted, a foil-only alternate art of a card that also exists as an ordinary printing. We matched 201 Enchanteds to their standard versions: the standard copy trades at a median of $0.35 (effectively bulk), while the Enchanted of the same card trades at a median of $102. That is a 66x premium against the standard foil, and a 235x premium against the non-foil copy most players own, and 100% of Enchanteds are worth at least 5x their standard version. The lesson generalizes: the biggest money in most games hides in special finishes and alternate arts, which is exactly why identifying the exact printing is the whole game.
How to value your foil in under a minute
- Pin the exact printing, and confirm the finish. On Cardmarket the foil is a separate product from the non-foil, often with a different card number. Make sure you are on the foil listing, not the plain one.
- Filter to English, Near Mint or better.
- Take the four lowest current offers and average them. That average, on the correct foil listing, is what your foil is genuinely selling for right now.

Where this matters when you sell
If you are listing cards, the finish is the single field sellers most often get wrong, and it cuts both ways: mislabel a plain card as foil and you lose the sale to a return, mislabel a foil as plain and you leave most of the value on the table.
