What it costs to complete a Pokémon set (and how the eras changed it)

For a modern set (2020 onward), buying one of every card within the printed set number, the base set, costs a median of about €102 across 31 sets, and the full MASTER set (secret rares plus the Trainer Gallery / Galarian Gallery / Shiny Vault sub-lists) medians about €839. The extremes are wide: Darkness Ablaze master-completes for about €261, while Evolving Skies runs about €5478. Because the market moved, not shrank. In the Sword & Shield era the median base set cost about €358, since chase cards like VMAXes lived inside the printed numbers. In the Scarlet & Violet era the median base set is about €28, roughly 13x cheaper, because nearly every valuable card now sits ABOVE the printed set number as an Illustration Rare, Special Illustration Rare or hyper rare. The master-set medians barely moved (€1040 vs €839). The extreme case is Destined Rivals: base ~€19, master ~€2451, about 128x.

Evolving Skies (2021), at about €5478 for the master set, and it is the only modern set whose BASE run alone costs ~€1853. Its ceiling card is Umbreon VMAX at about €1579, the priciest single in the whole dataset. A median 62.4% of any set's master cost sits in just its top 10 cards.

For every 2020+ Sword & Shield and Scarlet & Violet era set with at least 60 printed cards, we took one Cardmarket EUR trend price per distinct card via the open pokemontcg.io API and summed two cuts: base (cards within the printed set number) and master (every card, with the Trainer Gallery, Galarian Gallery and Shiny Vault sub-lists attached to their parent sets). Prismatic Evolutions is excluded because the source carries no Cardmarket prices for it; micro-sets like Celebrations are excluded for size.
