The Hobbit MTG Set Announcement: What We Know About Middle-Earth's Return

Wizards of the Coast officially announced The Hobbit MTG set at MagicCon Amsterdam (July 2026). Here's everything revealed: release date, mechanics, and what to expect.

In this guide

At MagicCon Amsterdam (July 18, 2026), Wizards of the Coast made the official announcement: The Hobbit is coming to Magic: The Gathering. Here's everything we know so far, and what to expect from the set.

The Announcement

Wizards revealed The Hobbit MTG set during the "There and Back Again" panel on Saturday, July 18, 2026, at MagicCon Amsterdam. The name is a direct reference to the book's subtitle, and the set returns players to Middle-Earth with Bilbo Baggins and the Dwarves, hunting the treasure guarded by Smaug.

What's Confirmed

The narrative: Bilbo Baggins, his thirteen Dwarves, and their quest form the spine of the set. Smaug is positioned as a major threat (expect a powerful Smaug card). The "There and Back Again" panel title hints at the journey structure, so expect cards spanning the Shire, the wilderness, Laketown, and the Lonely Mountain.

The IP: This is a Universes Beyond set (Magic's crossover line), meaning cards exist in Magic's lore but celebrate The Hobbit explicitly. The art and flavor text will lean heavy on Tolkien's world.

Release timing: Spoiler season typically starts shortly after announcement panels. Expect a fall 2026 or early 2027 release based on Wizards' standard lead-time pattern (3–4 months from spoiler start to release).

What we're waiting for

  • Exact release date (should be announced within weeks)
  • Mechanical themes (how Bilbo, the Dwarves, Smaug and Middle-Earth concepts interact with Magic rules)
  • Card previews (art, mechanics, power level)
  • Set size and rarity (Universes Beyond sets vary in size)

The cultural moment

The Hobbit is culturally massive (Peter Jackson films, Tolkien's legacy, recent Amazon Rings of Power era), so this set will likely pull casual and younger players alongside longtime Magic fans. Expect high demand at preorder and initial release.

What to watch for

  • Bilbo Baggins card(s), he'll almost certainly be a planeswalker or legendary creature; check his power level when revealed.
  • Smaug, the big bad; a powerful card here could define the set's metagame.
  • Dual cards representing key Dwarves; these tend to be collectible in Universes Beyond sets.
