The Reverse Holo Premium: are reverse holos worth more?

“Are reverse holos worth more?” is a question every Pokémon collector asks. We matched 1,794 cards that have both a normal and a reverse-holo price. The answer is yes, with a twist: it is almost all in the cheap cards.

a reverse-holo Common vs the regular
a reverse-holo Rare vs the regular (barely any)
2.6×
the overall median reverse premium

The premium is all in the cheap cards

Median reverse ÷ normal ratio by rarity. On commons and uncommons the reverse holo is the scarce collectible; on rares it is not.

Uncommonn=600

Raren=729

A reverse-holo bulk common can be worth 100×

The wildest gaps are old bulk commons whose reverse holos became set chases. The biggest here is Lairon: a normal copy is about €0.37, but the reverse holo runs around €51, roughly 138×. So when you are pulling through a bulk box, the reverse-holo commons are the ones worth a second look, not the plain ones.

FAQ

Are reverse holo Pokémon cards worth more than the regular version?

On the whole yes: across 1,794 cards with both a normal and a reverse-holo price, the reverse holo trades at a median 2.6× the regular, and 60% are at least 2×. But the premium is almost entirely in commons and uncommons; on rares it basically disappears.

Why are reverse holo commons worth so much more, but not rares?

A common's regular version is bulk, printed in huge numbers, so its reverse-holo (roughly one reverse per pack, and actively collected as a set) is much scarcer relative to demand: reverse-holo Commons run a median 4× the normal, Uncommons 3.9×. A Rare is already a holo-tier chase, so the reverse-holo version is not meaningfully scarcer, and the median premium is just 1×. The reverse holo is where the value hides on the cheap cards, not the expensive ones.

What is the biggest reverse holo premium?

Lairon: the reverse holo trades around €51 while the normal is about €0.37, roughly 138×. Old bulk commons whose reverse holos became sought-after set pieces produce the wildest gaps; several run 50× and up.

Where does this data come from, and is it reliable?

We pulled Pokémon cards with both a normal Cardmarket trend price and a reverse-holo trend price via the open pokemontcg.io API and took the median of the per-card reverse ÷ normal ratio, overall and by rarity (Cardmarket EUR trend price via the open pokemontcg.io API, valued 2026-07-05). We drop cards under €0.10 normal to avoid bulk-rounding noise. These are reference estimates, not sold records, and prices move. We never scrape marketplaces and never invent a number; the figures are reproducible from the open API.
