The Gold Star Premium: what Pokémon's rarest EX-era chase is worth
The Gold Star was the pull every EX-era Pokémon collector chased: a gold star by the name, a shiny alternate-colour Pokémon, a print run a fraction of a normal holo’s. Twenty years on, we priced all 25 of them and compared each to an ordinary holo from the very same booster series.
A scarcity tier you can price
Every Gold Star here came out of the same packs, in the same years, on the same holofoil stock as the ordinary holos it’s measured against. The only thing that changed is the rarity treatment, and the market pays 28× for it on the median. There are no cheap Gold Stars: even the floor of the rarity, €428, clears a typical same-era holo many times over. The median Gold Star is, fittingly, the delta-species Charizard Gold Star from Dragon Frontiers.

Method & sources
- We pulled every card at the Rare Holo Star (Gold Star) rarity with a Cardmarket price via the open pokemontcg.io API, 25 cards across 9 sets.
- For a baseline we took every ordinary Rare Holo from the exact same sets (245 cards) and its median. Same era, same sets, same holofoil stock isolates the chase-rarity premium.
- We report medians, robust to a single chase card, and rank every Gold Star individually so nothing is hidden in an average.
- Cardmarket EUR trend price via the open pokemontcg.io API. Valued 2026-07-22. Reference estimates for near-mint copies, not sold records; vintage prices move. Reproducible from the open API.
FAQ
What is a Pokémon Gold Star card?
Gold Star cards are a special rarity from the Pokémon EX era (roughly 2004-2007), marked with a gold star next to the name and using a distinctive holofoil. They were the era's ultra-rare chase, far scarcer than an ordinary holo, and many depict shiny (alternate-colour) Pokémon. There are 25 priced Gold Stars in this study across 9 sets.
How much are Gold Star cards worth?
A lot, and remarkably consistently. Across all 25 Gold Stars with a Cardmarket price, the median is €838, and even the cheapest sits at €428. That is about 28× the €30 median of an ordinary holo (Rare Holo) from the same sets. These are reference estimates for near-mint copies; graded gem-mint examples sell for multiples more.
What is the most expensive Pokémon Gold Star card?
Rayquaza ★ from Deoxys tops the list at €3,519. It is followed by the Team Rocket Returns starters (Mudkip, Torchic, Treecko) and the Holon Phantoms trio (Gyarados, Pikachu, Mewtwo). The gap is steep: the top handful clear four figures while the floor of the rarity still sits above €428.
Why is a Gold Star worth so much more than a normal holo from the same set?
Same era, same sets, same holofoil stock, so the difference is the Gold Star treatment itself: far lower print run, iconic shiny artwork and a cult following among EX-era collectors. Holding the set and era constant isolates that chase-rarity premium, which works out to about 28× on the median. It is a clean example of how a scarcity tier, not the Pokémon, drives value.
Where does this data come from, and is it reliable?
We pulled every Gold Star (rarity "Rare Holo Star") with a Cardmarket price via the open pokemontcg.io API, then the median ordinary holo (Rare Holo) from the exact same sets as a same-era baseline (Cardmarket EUR trend price via the open pokemontcg.io API, valued 2026-07-22). These are reference estimates, not sold records, and vintage prices move. We never scrape marketplaces and never invent a number; the figures are reproducible from the open API.
