The Planeswalker Index: which Magic Planeswalker is worth the most?

Planeswalkers are Magic's faces — but which one actually holds value? We took the median price of every printing of twelve iconic Planeswalkers (only real planeswalker cards, no namesakes). The order surprises: Ugin tops it, and Jace — who owns the single priciest card — barely cracks the top ten.

The Planeswalker Index

The Jace paradox

Jace owns the single most valuable Planeswalker card in this set — the Secret Lair Jace, the Mind Sculptor at about $300. Yet the typical Jace is just $2.54, ranking #9 of 12.

That gap between the average and the median is exactly why the Index ranks by the median: one trophy printing shouldn't decide whether a character is "worth more."

FAQ

Which Magic Planeswalker is worth the most?

By typical-card value, Ugin. Across every printing of every Ugin planeswalker the median TCGplayer price is $15 — about 3.3× the typical Planeswalker ($4.38) and 22.4× the cheapest, Gideon ($0.65). We rank by the median, not the average, so one chase printing can't crown a character — and 33% of Ugin printings still clear $20.

Isn't Jace the Mind Sculptor the most expensive Planeswalker?

As a single card, yes — the Secret Lair Jace, the Mind Sculptor (~$300) is the priciest Planeswalker printing in this set. But "Jace" spans many cards and printings, so the typical Jace is only $2.54, ranking #9 of 12. His average ($13) is ~5× his median — a textbook case of why one trophy card shouldn't define a character's value.

Why does Ugin top the list over flashier names?

Ugin has very few printings (a tight, colorless, format-defining Commander payoff) and steady demand, so even his cheap printings hold value — 33% clear $20. Characters like Chandra and Jace have been printed dozens of times across precons and core sets, which drags the typical copy down even when they produce a famous chase card.

Where does this data come from, and is it reliable?

We pulled every planeswalker card bearing each name (a strict type:planeswalker filter) and its TCGplayer USD price per printing via the open Scryfall API, then took the median per character (TCGplayer USD market price per printing, via the open Scryfall API, valued 2026-06-24). USD is the liquid MTG reference. These are reference estimates, not sold records, and prices move. We never scrape and never invent a number — the figures are reproducible from the open API.
