Which Magic color is the most expensive? The answer is no color.

Magic players argue endlessly about which colour is best. So we asked a cleaner question: which colour is worth the most money? We took the median price of 2,708 modern rares and mythics and grouped them by colour. The winner has no colour at all.

The fewer colours, the higher the price

Line the groups up and it is almost monotonic. Colorless ($1.68) goes in any deck, so it is priciest. Mono-colour cards fit any deck of that colour and sit in the middle. Multicolor ($0.49) only works when a deck runs both of its colours, so it is the cheapest of all, a 3.4x gap from colourless. A card's colour COUNT moves its price more than which colour it actually is.

FAQ

Which Magic: The Gathering color is the most expensive?

Counterintuitively, no color at all. Across 2,708 modern rares and mythics, Colorless cards (mostly artifacts) carry the highest median price ($1.68). Among the five actual colors, Green is priciest ($1.01) and White the cheapest ($0.67).

Why are colorless and mono-colored cards worth more than multicolor cards?

Deck fit. A colorless artifact can slot into any deck, and a mono-colored card fits any deck of that colour, so demand pools onto them. A multicolor card only works in decks running both of its colours, a much narrower audience, so it tends to be cheaper. The fewer colours a card commits to, the more decks want it.

Is White really the cheapest Magic color?

In this modern rare/mythic pool, yes: White has the lowest median ($0.67) of the five colours, with Green the highest ($1.01). The gap between colours is smaller than the gap between colourless and multicolor, so a card's colour COUNT matters more than which colour it is.

Where does this data come from, and is it reliable?

We pulled modern nonland rares and mythics (2021 onward) and their TCGplayer USD price via the open Scryfall API, then took the median per colour group (TCGplayer USD price via the open Scryfall API, valued 2026-07-03), excluding groups with fewer than 20 priced cards. These are reference estimates, not sold records, and prices move. We never scrape marketplaces and never invent a number; the figures are reproducible from the open API.
