How to Tell If a Pokémon Card Is Rare: Every Rarity Symbol Explained (2026)

Read the rarity symbol, set mark and card number to tell instantly whether your Pokémon card is common, rare, or a valuable chase card.

Most of a Pokémon collection is common — but the rare cards are where the value hides, and you can spot them in seconds once you know what to look at. Here's how to tell if a Pokémon card is rare.

Step 1 — the rarity symbol (bottom of the card)

Look at the bottom corner for a small symbol:

  • Circle — Common.
  • Diamond — Uncommon.
  • Star — Rare. This is the first sign a card might be worth something.
  • Star variants and special marks — modern sets add symbols for higher tiers (double rare, illustration rare, special art, hyper/rainbow rare, etc.). A star or anything fancier is worth a closer look.

Step 2 — the finish

Two cards with the same name can differ a lot by finish:

  • Holo — shiny foil on the artwork window.
  • Reverse holo — foil on the card body instead of the art.
  • Full-art / illustration rare — art covers the whole card; these are modern chase cards.
  • Secret / rainbow / gold rares — card number higher than the set total (e.g. 201/195). These are the rarest pulls.

Step 3 — set symbol and card number

The little set symbol and the collector number (like 4/102) identify the exact printing. The same character across different sets can range from cents to a fortune — so the number matters more than the name.

If the card number is *higher* than the set's total count, you're holding a secret rare. That's an instant "look this one up" flag.

Step 4 — vintage markers

On older cards, look for 1st Edition stamps and shadowless printing (no drop-shadow on the art box). These carry large premiums on classic cards.

Then check what it's worth

Rarity hints at value, but condition and demand set the price. Once you've identified a rare card, look it up free on Foilio — match the set and number — or read what's my Pokémon card worth. Got a stack? Scan them and your collection values everything at once.
